LONDON — In a way, Philip Treacy's hat show on Sunday night paid homage to the camp extravaganza that used to be common in London and Paris. The last great instigators were Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow, both close friends of Mr. Treacy's. He dedicated the show to them, and to Michael Jackson.
Mr. Treacy had the crazy idea of pairing his millinery designs with costumes worn by Mr. Jackson, before those garments are sold in December at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills. Michael Bush, who worked with Mr. Jackson for 25 years — first as a dresser, then as a costume designer (with Dennis Tompkins) — was in the front row, dressed in a glittery jacket. Lady Gaga, veiled in hot-pink chiffon, was mistress of ceremonies. She is a friend and client of Mr. Treacy's.
People stood and hollered. Mr. Jackson's bejeweled and military braided costumes were indeed awesome, but the showstoppers were the head pieces — a huge smiley-face saucer; straw creations that licked around the models' shoulders and heads like hostile blossoms; punk-style feathers; a white-frosted sailing ship; jewel-covered helmets; and a spinning wheel of a hat blazing with miniature lights. The designs were extraordinarily creative, and a real reflection of Mr. Treacy's feeling for his place in London fashion. Sarah Burton was among the guests at the show, which was styled by Katy England.
