Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta met early Wednesday in Beijing with the Chinese vice president, Xi Jinping, who is expected to become the nation's next leader.
The meeting with Mr. Xi in the Great Hall of the People was taken as evidence that the Chinese vice president has made a recovery from whatever ailment -- physical or political -- that kept him from making public appearances for two weeks and had prompted speculation about whether he would ascend to the top post.
Mr. Xi previously canceled at the last minute during a recent visit to Beijing by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Mr. Xi, wearing a dark suit, white shirt and blue tie, looked fit as he greeted Mr. Panetta with a handshake and broad smile in a large, ornate room.
The American and Chinese delegations posed for a group picture before sitting down to open talks with a few pleasantries.
Mr. Xi said the meeting "would be very helpful in further advancing" ties between the United States and China and their two militaries.
Mr. Panetta echoed that sentiment and expressed desire for an era of improved relations between the United States and China.
